The 4-4-2 can be adapted in so many ways that you can't really say it has obvious weaknesses. It's compactness means it's good defensively but also for keeping possession...the wide wings tuck in to create the overload in midfield which at the same time creates space for the full backs to push forward...this is how a modern 4-4-2 is implemented. 1 holding and 1 attacking midfield is the shape that optimizes spacing.. The only thing that I'd say works against it is that it is less direct offensively. You can't pressure the opposition defense as quickly..because the pace of your attack has to be in sync with the wingers getting forward to convert the midfield overload to an overload in the box..
